There are three main groups of people at risk of not getting an ample amount of food: The rural poor, the urban poor, and those who have suffered from a large catastrophe. With food prices skyrocketing poorer families, most often in developing countries, are the first to feel the affects. Many families are forced to change their lifestyles to accommodate for the lack of food. A part of the accommodation is that children are required to work in order to help provide food and are often removed from school to do so. Families are forced to eat cheaper and less nutritious foods resulting in sever malnutrition. Moreover one-third of all child deaths globally are from the result of malnutrition. With 80% of an individual's physical brain development occurring within the first one thousand days of life, an infant who is subjected to malnutrition often suffers from long term effects such as physical, mental and even social underdevelopment. Many simply don't make it at all. Listed below is the list of countries that fall prey to the rising cost of food.

Low-Income Food-Deficit Countries list-FAO-2013The 2013 list of the LIFDCs, used by the FAO for data analysis, consists of sixty-two of the most poor and food deficient countries across the globe. The number of countries classified on the list varies from year to year based on the specific criteria set forth by the FAO. The three basic requirements a country has to meet to be classified as a LIFDC are as followed:
Once on the list a country can only be removed from the list after three consecutive years proving improvement in status and is then taken off the list in the fourth year, after confirming a sustained improvement in its position for three consecutive years. |
